Cast Iron Project To Go Ahead As Planned

"In these difficult times, carrying out our construction plans as we ought to has been challenging, but I believe the current administration and people working behind the scenes are doing all they can to actualize our common target," said Coun. Heather Eby.

Nevertheless, the plan will go according to plan. Although, the construction process will cause a bit of hardship for businesses on High Street West and Fairford Street East, the replacement of cast iron pipes will go according to plan.

In an executive committee meeting last month, city council reaffirmed its decision to lay a series of cast iron pipes measuring 360 metres and 540 metres on Fairford Street East from Main Street to Second Avenue Northeast, and High Street West from Main Street to Third Avenue Northwest respectively.

The project will affect some of the businesses in the area including the likes of Temple Gardens Spa, Casino Moose Jaw, and so on.

The council voted in favour of the construction process in a closed door meeting. Due to the pandemic, the meeting was organized via zoom. Mayor Fraser Tolmie, and councillors Scott McMann, Crystal Froese and Swanson were present in the meeting, albeit sitting socially distanced. While councillors Heather Eby, Dawn Luhning, and Chris Warren were involved via zoom.

Eby spoke after the meeting that she was in favour, and she is still in favour of replacing the cast iron pipes on both streets as soon as possible.

While she didn’t want to see businesses on both streets suffer, she insisted that the work will only benefit them in the long run.

"We all know about the difficulties during the construction phase, but everything will be concluded as soon as possible. While it might be challenging now, in the long run it will be worth it. Moreover, the businesses would benefit massively from the construction."

There are still a good number of access routes on High Street, notably back alley entrances and parking lots. Although it is not ideal, it would suffice during the construction phase of the work. The replacement of the pipes will lead to fewer regular pipe breaks.

The committee is scheduled to meet in April.
