Many CBD products claim to be organic but are they certified organic? The quick answer is no. Can CBD be certified organic? YES. Companies can take the extra steps to register with the USDA to be certified organic. Vermont Organic Science is certified organic. We believe in organic practices. Check if a company is certified organic by checking the USDA organic integrity database. Search by operation, and if that company does not come up, they are NOT certified organic. There are a few CBD companies that are USDA certified organic. Still, the majority of CBD products out there are not.

How does CBD become certified organic?

Follow the Guidelines based on the USDA National Organic Program Standards to become certified organic. Different categories for vegetables, fruits, livestock, maple syrup, etc., will guide you through the steps to become certified organic. Thanks to the 2018 Farm bill, hemp, and hemp-derived products can now be certified. There is a multi-step process for one to become certified organic. The first step is to fill out an application from a USDA organic approved certifier and pay a fee. The second step is to pass an inspection from the approved certifier. The third step is the review process on the certification staff. If everything passes, then you are authorized to be a certified organic operation. This process could take upwards of 2-3 months and is up for renewal every year.

What to look for if a product is certified organic?

Part of being USDA certified organic is following strict guidelines for labeling. You cannot just slap the USDA organic seal anywhere on your label and be approved. When we submit products to be approved as certified organic, we have to get all the necessary paperwork on all of the ingredients that go into the product. This paperwork includes organic certificates, safety sheets, certificates of analysis, etc. From there, we have to fill out a form listing all the ingredients, suppliers, and organic certifiers of that supplier. We have to submit our label to the certifying agency to make sure we have followed all the USDA organic guidelines. These steps we take to guarantee that we can use the USDA organic seal on our products.

The USDA organic seal stands out on showing if a product is genuinely certified organic or not. You can find many CBD products with their little organic seal or claim that the product is organic. If they do not have the USDA organic seal, they have not taken steps to be certified organic. Their claims are baseless and have no proof. The best way to determine if an operation is a certified organic is to check out the USDA organic integrity database. Using the database you won’t have to guess if a companies label is lying or not. You can find the facts right away.

Why you should only buy USDA certified organic CBD

It is essential only to buy CBD products that are USDA certified organic. Why? Well for one, hemp is an extremely versatile plant. Farmers have grown hemp to clean soil that has become contaminated. Hemp is excellent at absorbing contaminants. After the Chernobyl disaster, they grew hemp to remove the toxins in the soil. This is why it is crucial to shop certified organic CBD products. You don’t want a product contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, or toxins. The plant does a great job of soaking up and then further concentrated in the extraction process.

Our certified organic CBD products were produced from hemp grown at a certified organic farm, so there is no worry about these nasty toxins being in products. Beyond the hemp plant, the other ingredients that go into our products are also certified organic. Be very wary of CBD products that claim to be organic. Check the 3rd party certificates of analysis for pesticides, heavy metals, toxins, etc. Also, check the USDA organic integrity database to see if they are certified organic. As you can now tell, there is a big difference between being certified organic and claiming to be organic.

Shop USDA Certified Organic CBD Products.
