So, Your Kid Wants to Become a DJ?

If you are a musical or artistic family it is guaranteed to rub off on your kids. If not, there’s a good chance popular culture will do its thing.

Either way, it is far from rare for kids to suddenly develop the desire to become DJs. The TikTok generation is easily influenced to say the least, monkey see, monkey do.

Not that any of this is a bad thing, of course,  there are far worse lines of work to get yourself into these days than the performing arts. Even if you don’t make it big, becoming a DJ can be seriously satisfying and become a fantastic hobby

Where to get started with regard to DJ equipment? If you are all about supporting your children on the path to DJ glory, what will they need to get up and running?

1. A Music Library

First up, they will need access to a streaming music library; kids these days have no interest in buying overpriced CDs and LPs, they are all about digital music which can save parents a small fortune.

As most streaming music subscriptions are age-restricted, you will probably have to open one on their behalf. They are expensive given the millions of tracks they will gain access to in real-time.

2. At Least One Good Piece of Hardware 

You could set your child up with an iPad or laptop in order to serve as the foundation of their setup, combined with a basic controller and you are good to go. 

Alternatively, you could opt for an all-in-one DJ console as the name suggests, this is a piece of hardware that comprises more or less everything needed to mix music. Both can get the job done equally well, so it is a case of considering which is going to cost you more and which is less likely to get broken. 3. Additional Accessories and Extras

Along with the centerpiece of their DJ setup, they will also need a few other bits and pieces to get the show up and running. Thankfully, much of what is left to fork out for can be surprisingly affordable and with a little TLC can last practically forever.

For example:

• DJ Software – there is no shortage of amazing DJ software packages available, which in many instances cost next to nothing and are user friendly enough for kids to work with.

• Speakers - even a single decent quality will do for the time being, as it is probably in your best interests to limit the maximum volume capacity.

• Headphones – they will be playing with their gear using headphones most of the time, so a decent set comes highly recommended. Headphones also mean peace and quiet for you.

• Lessons - most importantly of all, it is definitely worth considering hooking your kid up with an online DJing course. They are cheap, insightful and motivating.
